GoF is coming out soon, and there’s a lot of chatter around the net about the cast; who will appear, who’s signed on for the next film, who’s getting canned/sacked/replaced. The main concern of most fans are the fast maturing young actors who play Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
I think we go through another spate of wild speculation each time a new Potter film draws near. Not without some fuel, of course. The producer, David Heyman, regularly makes statements to the effect of, “I hope they’ll stay, but they probably won’t”. And the latest pictures of Dan Radcliffe make fans nervous to say the least.
But I think much of the worry is unfounded. Let’s not forget that Warner Bros. is a business. Their loyalty lies not in bringing realism to the films, but in making money. And with the cast so very popular, and appearing in the first four films (and all three are signed on at this point for OoTP), replacing them would cost Warner Bros. dearly. Many fans would be outraged, enough to boycott a film, I think. The fans can suspend reality enough to believe that the actors look the same age as their characters, but they won’t be able to suspend it enough to believe that the characters all suddenly look like different people.
Also, have you seen any teen movies lately? I looked a few of them up. For the most part, anybody playing a teenager is in their mid-20s. The speculated film schedule has HBP slated for a late 2008 release, so I’m guessing that leaves the last film with a 2010 release. At that point Dan Radcliffe will be 21, Emma Watson, 20, and Rupert Grint, 22. Hardly out of the realm to be playing 17 year olds.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that the cast themselves will just get tired of their Potter alter-egos, and call it quits. Such a move would be monumentally stupid in terms of their careers though, so I don’t think it likely.
What does everyone else think?

The Aspiring Aspirer over at Jim Hill Media.com has all the details. It seems one Lisa Holton passed on North American publishing rights after reading a copy of The Philosopher’s Stone, but who is now working for Harry Potter publisher Scholastic.
Choice quote from the article:
So now – with the former Senior V.P. of Global Disney Children’s Books recently installed as the new head of Scholastic, Inc. – could the crucial puzzle pieces finally be in place? Could the Walt Disney Company now be getting ready to acquire the company that publishes the North American editions of “Harry Potter” ?
Read the whole thing - it’s really quite interesting.

WARNING! The content of this post and the poll in the sidebar contain spoilers, for those who haven’t finished the latest Harry Potter book.
My first poll, visible in the sidebar: Is Dumbledore really dead?
I think so, but one theory has it that Snape said the killing curse out loud, he was actually thinking of another spell in his mind. Book 6 has all sorts of goodies on non-verbal spell-casting, but I think Severus did the deed. You?

This first post of Blogging Harry Potter is an open call to any and all bloggers who want to blog about the books and movies. We have such a plethora of fansites, message boards and “official” sites that I thought a collaborative blog might be a good place to start and engender discussion.
In the future, I’d like to add a message board, a weekly poll and some other fun ideas. But first, let’s get some other bloggers here.
I’m making the same appeal at my personal blog, Mostly Muppet Dot Com, as well as the other internet resources listed above. If you’d like to join in the fun, let me know.
WordPress provides an easy, stable foundation for me to start this project and add other like-minded individuals. If you’re a fan of the series and want to share your thoughts, feelings, theories, questions and stories, now is your chance!
