Cast Rumors And Speculation
by RavenclawWit
GoF is coming out soon, and there’s a lot of chatter around the net about the cast; who will appear, who’s signed on for the next film, who’s getting canned/sacked/replaced. The main concern of most fans are the fast maturing young actors who play Harry, Hermione, and Ron.
I think we go through another spate of wild speculation each time a new Potter film draws near. Not without some fuel, of course. The producer, David Heyman, regularly makes statements to the effect of, “I hope they’ll stay, but they probably won’t”. And the latest pictures of Dan Radcliffe make fans nervous to say the least.
But I think much of the worry is unfounded. Let’s not forget that Warner Bros. is a business. Their loyalty lies not in bringing realism to the films, but in making money. And with the cast so very popular, and appearing in the first four films (and all three are signed on at this point for OoTP), replacing them would cost Warner Bros. dearly. Many fans would be outraged, enough to boycott a film, I think. The fans can suspend reality enough to believe that the actors look the same age as their characters, but they won’t be able to suspend it enough to believe that the characters all suddenly look like different people.
Also, have you seen any teen movies lately? I looked a few of them up. For the most part, anybody playing a teenager is in their mid-20s. The speculated film schedule has HBP slated for a late 2008 release, so I’m guessing that leaves the last film with a 2010 release. At that point Dan Radcliffe will be 21, Emma Watson, 20, and Rupert Grint, 22. Hardly out of the realm to be playing 17 year olds.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that the cast themselves will just get tired of their Potter alter-egos, and call it quits. Such a move would be monumentally stupid in terms of their careers though, so I don’t think it likely.
What does everyone else think?
