Gred And Forge
Ok. Get ready. I have a super whacked out theory about Fred and George. Not only will they play a big role in book 7, they’re the key to the whole series. There used to be a theory that Ron was Dumbledore. But JKR debunked that theory on her site. But I think that Fred and George = Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore. Ok, I’ll give you a second to breathe. Here’s some evidence:
1. Dumbledore says that Aberforth had his wand snapped in two because of practising inappropriate charms on a goat. Two possibilities here: One, Dumbledore is lying and there’s a very good reason that Aberforth tends bar at the Hog’s Head. He’s a spy for the Order. It also could have something to do with the fact that meddling with time is apparently a serious crime. One of them may have to lay low so as not to be associated with two twins who’re suspected of time travelling. Or Fred/George really did do something whacky to a goat. Sounds like something they’d do right?
2. In HBP (pg.390), Ron receives a watch for his birthday. This watch is very similar, but not identical to the watch that Dumbledore has, mentioned on page 12 of PS/SS. Is it possible that Mr. and Mrs. Weasley get a magical watch for all their children when they come of age? They seem to like timepieces after all; don’t forget their “mortal peril” clock.
3. It’s weird to me that if the twins don’t have some major role, that JKR keeps them in the forefront of all the books. She could send them off somewhere or simply keep mentioning that they’re busy with their store, but they keep putting in an appearance.
4. Also in HBP (pg. 339), Fred and George give Mrs. Weasley some very nice presents for Christmas. George says to her, “Well, we find we appreciate you more and more Mum, now we’re washing our own socks”. Who else do we know that likes socks? Dumbledore, of course. It’s what he claims to see in the mirror of Erised.
5. Speaking of the mirror, how does Dumbledore know what Ron saw in the mirror? He says he has ways of being invisible when Harry asks him, but this seems weird. So Dumbledore is addicted to the mirror? Or maybe he knows because he knows Ron, he being his brother and all.
6. In PS/SS, Dumbledore also knows that Fred and George sent Harry a toilet seat. Madam Pomfrey could have told him; but why would she bother the headmaster with something so trivial?
7. In her most recent interview with Mugglenet, JKR makes several interesting statements about Dumbledore, and she’s very cagey when asked about anything to do with his past. She won’t say what he would really see in the mirror or what his patronus is. She also says, “You will — [pause] — you will know more about Dumbledore. I have to be sooo careful on this.” Then later, Emerson asks where Dumbledore learned everything he knows and she replies, “I see him primarily as someone who would be self-taught. However, he in his time had access to superb teachers at Hogwarts, so he was educated in the same way that everyone else is educated. Dumbledore’s family would be a profitable line of inquiry, more profitable than sweet wrappers.”
So that, in effect is my theory. Fred and George travelled back in time and literally became Albus and Aberforth Dumbledore. It has been said elsewhere that there isn’t a way to go forward in time (at least that we know about), so they must have gone far enough back that they couldn’t “catch up” like Harry and Hermione did in PoA. Why did they go back in time? Could be many reasons. Could have a lot to do with Harry, and more I suspect with Ron. This is far-fetched, but I love coming up with crazy theories. Really, in JKR’s world, anything is possible! I just came up with it, so I’m still thinking it through. But please by all means, discuss it with me.
Edit: I also posted this on the Mugglenet forums, so if you see both, it’s not plagiarized; I’m RavenclawWit over there too.

How did they travel back in time?
Interesting Theory at the very least.

Interesting theory! And also don’t forget about how when the twins tried to cross the time-line in GoF they grew “long white beards” —> kinda like the Dumbledores’ beards??

JKR has already debunked all theories on anyone traveling back in time. Not Ron, not Harry, not anyone. But this theory was an interesting read.

I don’t think I have ever read such twaddle in all my life. Fred and George are recurrent characters because they are entertaining - the Weaselys are like a surrogate family to Harry and we are meant to feel close to the twins because they are almost like his brothers. Therefore they are important structurally and do not need to act as some significant clue or plot twist. As for the socks, the words scraping, bottom and barrel come to mind; really that was the most tenuous connection - Uncle Vernon’s socks are used to hold Harry’s sneakoscope, Dobby makes Harry a pair of socks for Christmas; Moody admires Harry’s socks with his magical eye - do you mean to say that all these refernces to simple foot garments have some sinister portent? May I suggest that you have too much time on your hands and should take up a constructive hobbey (tiddlywinks, French knitting, potholing etc.) and leave HP theorising to someone with something useful to say

There’s really no need to be so rude, Fran. It’s just a theory and if you don’t agree with it; that’s fine, but please keep your personal comments to yourself. Fortunately, the last time I checked you don’t own this blog, so I think I’ll come up with whatever theories I want. If you don’t like it, go somewhere else.

In any case JKR on her site dismissed this theory… Though admitted that it’s a nice one

I had the same thought, and here’s another that is not necessarily independent from that one—both Albus & Aberforth are unregistered animagi—-they are each able to transform into a Phoenix. Fawkes is actually Aberforth. This also allows for the possibility of Albus’ return in Book 7—-rising from the ashes, literally and metaphorically. Just a thought…

I like the idea Dave has. Mainly, because, I LOVE ALBUS!! He’s basically my favorite character in the whole series. Him and Tonks. So I’m hoping that Dave here is correct.

Well, Rowling said that Dumbledore is not coming back to life…I was so sad when I heard…eerr…read that.
Anyway, I enjoyed your theory. I absolutely love Gred and Forge and I wouldn’t put that past them, but my first thought was about the time turners getting smashed during the battle at the Department of Mysteries. Then again, who’s to say there aren’t be more out there that other witches and wizards were using at that time.
That’s also real awesome that Rowling enjoyed your theory, even though she dismissed it.
Keep on thinking on it. You never know, you may end up figuring it out.
By the way; what do you think about Fawkes being a horcruxes (spelling?)? There have been a few things that have made me wonder if she is one. Including the time that Harry was in the Pensive with Dumbledore, watching Riddle ask for a teaching job again. Harry thinks that he sees Riddle move, but is unsure and Fawkes is sleeping at the time…eh, I’m gonna stop now. It would be easier to just wait for the last book…the last book…those three words make me so sad.

This is interesting… and although the books are obviously different from the movies, think about in the Goblet of Fire movie when Fred and George age. They don’t look a thing like Albus does…

Interesting theory, but unfortunately we’ve already seen back into Dumbledore’s past, far enough to see him as a relatively young man, and it was never noted that he happened to look anything like the twins. I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree with the blog’s author on this one.

It’s a great theory! I love coming up with HP theories too! anyway it was a nice try but now that the series has finished (at least for now…) we know that this couldnt possibly be real. But I still adore Fred, George, Albus and Aberforth no matter what! and all the other characters, of course!
