Daniel Radcliffe to star in Equus
I got this article from the New York Post, so the reporting and details err towards the salacious side (Harry Potter Naked!), but this is a great development.
Equus is a very mature, powerful, dramatic play full of complex themes and tough philosophical and ethical questions. It’s all the things Harry Potter fans (like us) want as the books and movies progress and it should really stretch Radcliffe as an actor.
The play opens January 2007 in London and also stars Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon).
UPDATE: CNN.com (via Reuters) is reporting the same news. They say rehersals start in January and the play opens in March 2007.

I’m still out on this. Firstly, I trust almost nothing that the Post says, and secondly, this rumor has come up before and was roundly denied by Radcliffe’s camp. We’ll see. It would definitely be a challenging role going from Harry Potter to Equus. I saw a production of it in New York with Randy Harrison playing Alan, and it’d definitely be an eye-opening experience for most Potter fans.

Nevermind, it has been confirmed that Dan will indeed be starring in Equus. All I can say is wow. It\’s daring for a teen heartthrob type. Guess he might have a little sauce in him after all.

Daniel has never said that he’ll be quitting the HP films after the fifth one. Don’t know where you got that information. Most likely all three kids will continue the roles until the last movie is filmed.

Try to be a little less rude. CNN is wrong. All the mainstream news sources say that because every year the kids are getting older and they like to stir up controversy. But Daniel has never said he won’t continue after the fifth film. In fact, he said a few months ago that there were many scenes in book 6 that he was looking forward to filming. Show me on HPANA or DanRadcliffe.com where he says he won’t continue. Also, the whole point of having Steve Kloves not write the screenplay for Order of the Phoenix was so that he could work on Half-Blood Prince because they want to get the movies done quickly while the trio is still young.

Here is a quote from an interview done with Dan by the webmaster at DanRadcliffe.co.uk (his main fan site):
Page: “Since 2003, thank you very much for giving me the time again. So I thought I’d start off with a pulse check. Back in, I guess it might have been 2003, during Chamber of Secrets promotion, you sort of openly admitted that you felt it would be quite an honour to play Harry throughout the whole series in the films. So you’ve just completed four films, do you still feel like it’s still an honour?”
Dan: “Yeah absolutely, particularly after having read the sixth book, I think it would definitely be a massive honour to play Harry in all of them. It does just sort of depend on what happens with, I mean if everyone else starts to tower over me, or I’m too short, or I suddenly grow loads, I don’t know what will happen, but you know, or I suddenly become too tall or whatever, you know, so it’s um.. obviously it would be an amazing opportunity to have played him in all seven films, assuming they do all seven. But yeah certainly having done four films already feels like a fantastic honour to have actually done them, because you know, the majority of the films are done, and it really feels like a massive achievement.”

In it he says that when he was reading book six, there were scenes he really wanted to do. And he also says he sort of takes everything one film at a time and that’s why he doesn’t sort of commit ahead of time to doing them. The real reason is obviously for business reasons. He’s probably advised by his agents not to say he wants to do the next film so that they can score a larger paycheck for him.
I’m still unable to find anything where he said he won’t continue after the fifth film. Rumor debunked as far as I’m concerned.

I honestly think it’s a much better move than staying on the “Harry” image…
I happen to be a great fan of both the books and the movie. I’ve been reading the first few books even before the movie. I think that Dan shouldn’t limit himself to just being “Harry”… He’s an actor for goodness sakes!!!

He is should be judged by how well he can portray his roles and he should be allowed to expand his horizons… C’mon! Give the guy a break! He’s 17… let him make his own choices,

Just to let all of you know… I saw Equus last week, and it was incredible!!!! Probably not suited for childern of HP going age, but wow!! Daniel was incredible, and his scenes were so powerful!! I’m very impressed with him, and his acting in the HP movies does nothing for him as an actor. It’s brought him fame, but Equus shows his true brilliance as an actor!!
