I used to hate it, but desperate for stuff to read in between HP books, I now like it. I think I had read some bad fanfic which had initially turned me off to fanfic in general, but then I read some good ones and really liked them. I also used to refuse to read any HP fics that were erotic in nature or “slash” but I’ve succumbed to that too. I was kind of afraid that that sort of thing would ruin my canon reading of the HP novels, but I’ve learned to sort of compartmentalize fanfic from the canon so that I think of them as entirely separate worlds and characters. For instance, the Harry Potter I read about in fanfiction is not the same Harry Potter in Rowling’s books. Make sense?
By the way, my sense of duty as a “responsible adult” makes me feel the need to say that only people over age 18 should read erotic or slash fanfiction. I know people younger than that do read it and even write some of it, but I don’t want some concerned parent reading this blog and thinking I’m advocating adult material for minors.
